This paper examines the functions and uses of IT, specifically the internet for educational purposes in general, and for the teaching and learning of English in a sub-degree course in particular. The design of an exercise in an English course at sub-degree level, with the objective of using the web to encourage interactive discussion among students and staff and the development of distributed cognitions (Pea, 1993) and ''person-plus'' (Perkins, 1993) in the students, is looked into and its effectiveness analysed. Some of the problems arising from the exercise are discussed as well.-
