Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK)

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) (香港教育大學) is one of the eight government-subsidized universities under the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong and the only one dedicated to teacher education. Founded in 1994 and granted university title in 2016, the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) (香港教育學院) was retitled The Education University of Hong Kong under the Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Ordinance 2016 on 27 May.

As described in detail in HKIEd’s Annual Report for 1994/95, its history can be traced back to 1853 when the first formalized programme of in-service teacher training was introduced at St. Paul’s College. [1]

In June 1992, under the recommendation made by the Education Commission Report No 5,[2] the Hong Kong Institute of Education should be established by amalgamating five former Colleges of Education, namely Northcote College of Education (羅富國教育學院) (1939), Grantham College of Education (葛量洪教育學院) (1951), Sir Robert Black College of Education (柏立基教育學院) (1960), Institute of Language in Education and Hong Kong Technical Teachers’ College. The new school came under the aegis of the the University Grants Committee (UGC).[3] On 25 April 1994, HKIEd was formally established by legislation. [4]
