Fong, Walter

Walter Ngon Fong (鄺華汰) was the principal of Li Sing Scientific and Industrial College, which was founded in 1905. He was originally from Guangdong, China. He studied for the ministry at the University of Pacific in California and became a Methodist preacher. He was also the first Chinese to graduate from Stanford University in 1896. For some years, Fong helped to organize the Hong Chung Society, an anti-Qing government organization, in America. He resigned his post as instructor at the University of California to become the principal of Li Shing Scientific and Industrial College, striving to strengthen the education of young China and further reform in that country. Walter N. Fong died in May 1906 at the age of 40. [1]
