Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC) (恒生商學書院) was a school established in 1980 to provide post-secondary programmes in business and related areas. In 2010, HSSC was restructured and became Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) (恒生管理學院), a non-profit private university-level institution to offer bachelor’s and above degree programmes in diversified disciplines. In 2018, HSMC was granted approval by the government to change its title to The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) (香港恒生大學). [1]

Background

In 1963, Hang Seng Bank started to provide a six-week Elementary Banking Programme for its staff. Later, the programme was extended to outsiders. In 1969, Dr Ho Sin Hang, the then Chairman of Hang Seng Bank, proposed to establish a full-time non-profit institution for post-secondary 5 graduates. The programmes would be designed according to the needs and future development of the financial sector. It was targeted that the programmes would be complementary to programmes offered by other local business institutions. Sir Lee Quo-wei, the then General Manager of Hang Seng Bank, applied for land at nil premium from the Government to build the campus. In 1974, the Government granted the land for the campus in Shatin New Town. [2] [3]

Establishment

With the funding from Hang Seng Bank, the S. H. Ho Foundation, Dah Chong Hong Ltd., and several founding shareholders of Hang Seng Bank, the Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony of Hang Seng School of Commerce was held on 2 November 1979. HSSC was formally registered with the Education Department on 12 September 1980 and the academic instruction began in October 1980. [2] [3]

Development

In the early years, the school offered 2-year full-time diploma programme in the business. Evening programme for adults was offered from 1981. In the academic year 1983/1984, Computing, Accounting, Management, Law, English, and Putonghua etc, were covered by the programmes. [3]

In September 1991, Hang Seng School of Commerce launched the programme for Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination. The diploma programme was changed from 2-year to 1-year. [3]

Associate in Business Administration Programme was launched in 2003 and Pre-Associate in Business Administration Programme was launched in 2005. [3]

In 2010, Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) was restructured from HSSC. Three bachelor’s degree programmes were launched. [2]

In 2018, HSMC received the approval for university title on 30 October and changed its name to The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong with effect from 8 November. [2]
