Hong Kong Polytechnic (香港理工學院) was established in 1972, taking over the campus and staff of the Hong Kong Technical College (formerly named as The Government Trade School 香港官立高級工業學院). The Governor, the late Sir Murray MacLehose, became the first President of the Polytechnic.[1]

The establishment of Hong Kong Polytechnic was the direct result of a proposal submitted by the Polytechnic Planning Committee, which was formed under the UGC in May 1969 to study the setting up of a polytechnic-type institution in Hong Kong,[2] to the government in 1971.[1]
