Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Hong Kong Polytechnic 香港理工學院 was established in 1972, taking over the campus and staff of the Hong Kong Technical College (the former named as The Government Trade School in Wanchai). The Governor, the late Sir Murray MacLehose, became the first President of the Polytechnic.[1]
It was renamed as The Hong Kong Polytechnic University 香港理工大學 in 1994 as acquiring university status on same year 25 November.
Actually, back into 1969, there is recognizing the need for a polytechnic-type institution, a Polytechnic Planning Committee was established under the UGC in May 1969.[2] The Polytechnic Planning Committee, chaired by Dr P.Y. Tang, was appointed to make detailed proposals on the establishment of a polytechnic in Hong Kong. [1]
The Polytechnic was established to nurture professional technologists and technicians to meet the growing needs of the booming manufacturing industry in Hong Kong. Practical skills and experiences of students were particularly emphasized during the time, which led the establishment of Industrial Centre (IC) 工業中心 (see also: Search Records "Industrial Centre" in VPET Repository) in 1976. In its early years IC operated as a primitive industrial training base, providing traditional and basic training activities as part training for engineering and construction students as to meet the industry needs. [3]
The University logo is developed from the well-established emblem designed in the early 1970 for the then Hong Kong Polytechnic. The round shapes at each corner interwine to symbolize "P" for Polytechnic and "U" for University. The image of "T" that stands for technical excellence in the past logo is retained, and the open perimeter represents increased interaction between the University and the world.
