The Marden Foundation was founded in 1973 by the couple John and Anne Marden. John Marden was the Chairman of Wheelock and Marden at that time. After the Communist takeover of China and the flood of refugees were packed off over the border by the Chinese government. The absence of government support for these people prompted the Marden family to offer help to assist those less fortunate who preferred an education with more practical and technical content. The Marden family originally planned to build a pre-vocational school but the government counter proposed to build three schools and Marden Foundation could help upgrade them. The 3 Marden Foundation schools were:

  • Marden Foundation Caritas Prevocational School - Tuen Mun (馬登基金明愛屯門職業先修學校), founded in 1977 and later altered its name to Caritas Tuen Mun Marden Foundation Secondary School (明愛屯門馬登基金中學).
  • Marden Foundation Caritas Prevocational School - Chai Wan (馬登基金明愛柴灣職業先修學校), founded in 1979 and later altered its name to Caritas Chai Wan Marden Foundation Secondary School (明愛柴灣馬登基金中學).
  • Marden Foundation Caritas Prevocational School - Shatin (馬登基金明愛沙田職業先修學校). The school began giving lessons in September 1979 in a borrowed premise in Wo Che Estate. Then, the school moved to its own buildings in September 1980. The school was reported to have 640 students and the enrollment was expected to increase to over 1000 in the new campus. The school later altered its name to Caritas Shatin Marden Foundation Secondary School (明愛沙田馬登基金中學) and ceased operation in 2008.
