The Education University of Hong Kong 香港教育大學 is one of eight subsidized Universities under the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong and the only one dedicated to teacher education. It was retitled from the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) 香港教育學院 under the Hong Kong Institute of Education (Amendment) Ordinance 2016 on 27 May 2016.

In June 1992, under the recommendation made by the Education Commission Report No 5, the Hong Kong Institute of Education was the amalgamation of former Colleges of Education and Institute of Language in Education, came under the aegis of the UGC, ie.

Northcote College of Education 羅富國教育學院 (1939),
Grantham College of Education 葛量洪教育學院 (1951),
Sir Robert Black College of Education 柏立基教育學院 (1960),
Hong Kong Technical Teachers’ College 香港工商師範學院 (1974) and
Institute of Language in Education 語文教育學院 (1982).

Till on 25 April 1994, HKIEd was formally established by legislation. [1]/
