The Technical Institute (香港官立技術專科學校) was established in 1907. During the governmentship of Sir Matthew Nathan, the government started to show interest in elementary technical education. It was the first technical institute in Hong Kong.
This institute was absorbed into the Hong Kong University when it opened in 1912.
It formed a sub-department under the Director of Education. It had no buildings of its own but was housed at Queen's College, a secondary school, situated on Hong Kong Island.
