Tung Wah Education Service

Tung Wah Group's Education Service (formerly called “Free Education by Tung Wah Hospitals”, or 東華義學 ) could be traced back to 1880, when Chung Wah College (中華書院), where adjacent to Man Mo Temple (文武廟) on Hollywood Road, began its free education service. Chung Wah College provided free education to the poor and the school's operation was supported by the donation received from the Man Mo Temple. Although the main curriculum were the Three Character Classic (三字經), the Four Books (四書) and the Five Classics (五經), the education also included vocational trainings, the students would be equipped with a technical skill after graduation.

In 1908, when Man Mo Temple handed to Tung Wah Hospitals, the education service was officially under Tung Wah’s management. Tung Wah Hospitals continued expanding their free education service and founded a total of 21 primary schools in Hong Kong in 1928. Tung Wah Group also founded an evening school for male adults in 1920, called 半夜學堂. The school had also admitted female students starting in 1931. Tung Wah Hospitals also started their own vocational training for professional nurses in 1927. Free Education by Tung Wah Hospitals was suspended in 1941 due to the Japanese occupation.

Free Education by Tung Wah Hospitals resumed its service in 1946, and continued expanding the education networks for primary schools and secondary schools. Tung Wah Group’s education service founded their first higher education institute in 2010.
